The Sea Of Monsters - Rick Riordan

Also reviewed by Mindy.

Summary: The way he said my name sent a chill down my back. Nobody called me "Perseus" except those who knew my true identity. Friends...and enemies.

Percy Jackson's seventh-grade year has been surprisingly quiet. Not a single monster has set food on his New York prep-school campus. But when an innocent game of dodgeball among Percy and his classmates turns into a death match against an ugly gang of cannibal giants, things get...well, ugly. And the unexpected arrival of Percy's friend Annabeth brings more bad news: the magical borders that protect Camp Half-Blood have been poisoned by a mysterious enemy, and unless a cure is found, the only safe haven for demigods will be destroyed.

In this fresh, funny, and hugely anticipated follow-up to The Lightning Thief, Percy and his friends must journey into the Sea of Monsters to save their beloved camp. But first, Percy will discover a stunning new secret about his family--one that makes him wonder whether being claimed as Poseidon's son is an honor, or simply a cruel joke. My Review: This is the second in the Percy Jackson series. It has much less character development, which if you're continuing the saga isn't necessarily a bad thing. I found it a bit lacking in drawing me in quite as much as the first novel because of this. But, there is more action per pages. You see lots of fighting, particularly with new Monsters and Percy starts to learn in new ways what his abilities are by being the son of Poseidon and just how to use them to save his life or his friends' lives. While I don't think it's better than the first, it was a fun read. I'll probably be picking up the next book here soon, although I think I need a short break before jumping into #3.

Rating: 4 Stars

Sum it up: It felt like just a chapter in Percy's life--not necessarily the most important, but critical to the development of Percy's character.
